Hi I'm trying to put together a few typical social role plays in Dutch for me to practice. But before i start practicing them i need to make sure they make sense. Could someone just read these through, and tell me of any errors? (as i'm sure there are a few!) Thanks Eerste: Waar is de pastkamers? Op de eerste verdieping naast de trap. Bedankt! Hoveel stukken heeft u? Ik will graag drie stukken proberen alstublieft. Tweede: Heeft u dit in een verschillende grotte? ('grotte' i don't think is the right word for size??) Welk grotte ben u? Grotte 10 alstublieft. Ik zal controleren in ons kleding kamer. Het spijt me. Grotte 10 verkrijgbaar niet, graag jij een ander kleur? Ja, alstublieft, heeft u grotte 10 in grijs? Ja, volg me Dank u wel.

Hi Cherish, There were indeed some errors, I corrected them (using our traditional colour code - blue is for spelling or just wrong words, red is for word order, green is for words that were missing, though you kind of have to pay attention to notice the green, it's not very flashy). "Grootte" (with double O, as per Dutch pronunciation rules, closed syllable and all that - are you familiar with those rules?) is indeed not really the normal word for "size" in a clothing context, we generally use "maat". And it's more common to say "Welke maat heeft u?", though I wouldn't say "bent" is never used. Regarding "verschillend", that is indeed the translation of "different", but the two words don't match entirely. You use "verschillend" when you're really comparing two or more things which are different from each other - two persons who are very "verschillend", for instance. But not when you mean "something other than this", as in this case. Then we use "ander" and its derivatives, literally "other". I guess that's weird for an English speaker, but you'll have to get used to it. It's also the translation for "else" - someone else = iemand anders, something else = iets anders, and so on. I didn't correct "kleding kamer" because I just wasn't sure what you meant. That word doesn't exist in Dutch (and if it did exist, it'd have to be written in a single word.) "Kleedkamer" does, but that means "dressing room" and doesn't really seem to make sense in context.

Er moet in acht genomen worden dat Nederlandse en Britse kledingmaten verschillend zijn. Een beetje hulp: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clothing_sizes
Hebben is hebben, maar krijgen is de kunst.

Thanks for the feedback and corrections, it's hard learning by yourself. By 'kledingkamer' i was trying to say 'store room' so i took a random guess What is the Dutch translation for 'Store room'? I will change my translation of 'Grotte' to 'maat' thanks for that! I have some more role plays to come! Thankyou for the link Bert.

Ik zou het toch nog iets anders doen:
Is dit de rij om te betalen? Ja,dat klopt. Hallo, ik wil graag deze drie kledingstukken alstublieft. (Although Dutch people are not nearly as polite as English people in these situations, there is nothing wrong with saying 'alstublieft' here) Dat is dertig euro, contant of credit card? Mag/Kan ik contant betalen ? Jazeker!
