Word pronounciations

Would you like to publish your own sound files? As a Dutch native speaker, you can create sound files to help Dutch learners. If you are studying Dutch, you can record your voice to practice your pronunciation -- and ideally, let the rest of us enjoy it too. :)

Word pronounciations

Hi,

Been trying to pickup the Dutch language over at Memrise, but one of the things that seems missing for most of the Dutch words there are pronounciations.

Someone's done some work on using 3rd party-provided lists of recorded words - this currently works only for English but I hope that I can convert it to work for Dutch as well. The only problem is finding good databases of recorded words to use a source.

Forvo has a bunch of Dutch pronounciations available, which are accessible through an API (but that API requires signing up for an account to use, which makes it cumbersome for others to use). There seem to be some wordlists here, but those are single files containing a list of words, not one file per word containing only the pronounciation and which is easy to have a program automatically lookup a word in.

Is anyone aware of any other websites containing a large list of pronounced Dutch words that might be useful to augment a site like Memrise's word lists? (Hopefully this is the right forum for this).

WikiMedia has some: about 10,000 of them see http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Categ ... nunciation

We use them at nl.wktionary pretty systematically, but I must admit it is woefully incomplete. Uploading sound files has always been very tedious, although it has gotten a bit easier lately.

Most of it is alphabetized under the begin letter of the word, but some of it ends up under the N of nl, so if you cannot find a word do check there.

Another option, although I don't really use it myself and so don't know how often it's off, is Acapela, which is an automated pronunciation service in a bunch of languages.
