You can use a conjunction to link words, phrases, and clauses: "I studied for weeks but I passed my exam." "Can you see anything or is it too dark?" "Tell me when you are ready to go." "He is taller than I." "He made notes [i]while[/] the teacher was talking."

Sentences with omdat

Hi all,

I'd like you to give me a couple of correct sentences using omdat. I'd like to have some shorter, and some where you have a hoofdzin and a bijzin. And I'd also like to understand them, so please give me the correct translation for them as well.

Thanks,
aladar

Omdat always starts a subclause (bijzin). So without main clause (hoofdzin) the sentence is not complete. Note that after omdat (or in a subclause in general), all verbs go to the end of the clause.
Examples:
Ik wil een biertje, omdat ik dorst heb.
I want a beer, because I'm thirsty.

Ik ga vroeg naar bed, omdat ik erg moe ben.
I'm going to bed early, because I'm very tired.

Hij blijft vandaag thuis, omdat hij ziek is.
He stays home today, because he's ill.

Deze bloemen zijn voor jou, omdat ik van je hou.
These flowers are for you, because I love you.

U krijgt een bekeuring, omdat u te hard hebt gereden.
You'll get a fine, because you drove too fast.

Ik moet vandaag hard werken, omdat dit morgen klaar moet zijn.
I have to work hard today, because this has to be finished by tomorrow.

De man is overleden, omdat de dokter niet op tijd kon komen.
The man died, because the docter couldn't come in time.

Compare the main sentences (without omdat) where the finite verb always comes second:
Ik heb dorst.
Ik ben moe.
Hij is ziek.
Ik hou van je.
Morgen moet dit klaar zijn.
De dokter kon niet op tijd komen.

Great work Joke,

Thanks a lot.

I tried myself now, can someone check it:

Ik wil een warme thee, omdat ik keelpijn heb.
I'd like a tea, because I have a pain in my throat.

Zij leren Hongaars, omdat zij kunnen in Hongarije met de mensen praten.
They learn Hungarian, so they can speak with the people in Hungary.

Ik vind Nederlands moeilijk, omdat ik de volgorde niet weet.
I find Dutch difficult, because I don't know the woordorder.

Thanks,

You're welcome!

Correct.

Omdat = because. It indicates reason.
Zodat is used to indicate a result, consequence or effect.
And don't forget to place all the verbs at the end of a sentence in all subclauses, so also after zodat.

Correct.
