Schermen, are separable verbs and subordinate clauses already hunting you in your dreams? =D

I just realized that the word order chapter did not contain a page yet about the behaviour of separable verbs in subordinate clauses. I just quickly added this page (still needs a bit more fine-tuning: http://www.dutchgrammar.com/html/dutch/ ... dOrder.57a, which may help solve the 'Toen stond op hij vanochtend" puzzle.

Ik denk dat ik heb nu zin gemaakte op deze zin maar ik moet in engelse schrijven voor mijn logische te verklaren.
I think I've made sense of this sentence now but I must write in English to explain my logic.

The original "test" sentence was:

Toen hij vanochtend opstonden, hij zag dat hij zich is verslapen.
When he got up this morning, he noticed (saw) that he had overslept.

This sentence has two clauses. The first confusion is that the subordinate clause comes before the main clause. If we rearrange the (English) sentence we get:
He saw that he had overslept (when he got up this morning).

I think I've resolved the main clause:
Hij zag dat hij zich verslapen had.

We've now got to look at the subordinating clause. In English we have:
When | He | got up | this morning
Conj.|Subj.|verbs | time when

In dutch this will give us

Toen | hij | vanochtend | opstond
Conj.| Subj.| time when | verbs.
(I want to say "stond op " here but as this is the only verb in the subclause the separable prefix remains attached?)
so the whole sentence should be:
(Fanfare of trumpets)

Toen hij vanochtend opstond, zag hij dat hij zich verslapen had.

woordvolgorde.

In het engelse is het woordvolgorde erg buigbaar.
In English word order is very flexible

Er is een gedicht; "Elegy written in a country churchyard" van Thomas Grey.
There is a poem; "Elegy written in a country churchyard" by Thomas Grey.

een regel uit dat gedicht is:
A line from that poem is:
"The ploughman plods his weary homeward way"
De ploeger sjokt zijn vermoeide weg thuis (sjokken = lopen vermoeid?)

Men zegt dat deze regel in 18 verschillende manieren kunnen schrijven zijn zoals:
It is said that this line can be written in 18 different ways such as:
1 The ploughman plods his weary homeward way.
2 Weary, the ploughman plods his homeward way.
3 Homeward, the ploughman plods his weary way.
4 The ploughman, homeward, plods his weary way.
5 His homeward way the weary ploughman plods.
enz.

In elke manier, is het goede zin.
Each way, these sentences make sense.

Gelukkig Ik heb geen engelse te leren!
Lucky I don't have to learn English!

Ik moet nu naar slaap gaan zodat Ik over werkwoorden en clausules droom.
I must go to sleep now so that I can dream about verbs and clauses.

Hoera! Wat een doorzettingsvermogen.
Ik denk niet dat iemand het erg vindt dat je dit onderwerp hebt gekaapt (hijacked). Het is zeer leerzaam (ook voor ons) om te zien welke fouten je kunt maken en hoe je ze oplost.

Leuk voorbeeld trouwens, van de vele woordvolgordes die je in het Engels kunt gebruiken. Lastige taal toch, dat Engels! Het voordeel is wel dat je met een beetje gokken toch een goede woordvolgorde te pakken hebt.

I don't think anyone minds you hijacking this thread. We (including the vraagbaken) learn a lot by seeing where you can make mistakes and how you can solve them.

Nice example, by the way, of the many different word orders that you can use in English. Quite a difficult language, isn't it! However, the advantage is that, even with a bit of guesswork, you are more likely to produce a good sentence (word order-wise) than in Dutch.
